Good afternoon everyone!
Please forward your spam messages as Attachments to spam@fhcrc.org. The samples submitted will help in improving the anti-spam server algorithms. We hope that this will reduce the number of spam messages that arrive in your mailbox each day.
Thanks,
Charles

All,
You may have noticed a spike in the number of spam messages making it to your inboxes lately; we've also had a few tickets from end users concerned with more spam.
There haven't been any changes to our systems. The Sophos PureMessage systems are still assigning spam scores as they see fit, and our profiles system is still parsing mail according to the scores and users' preferences.
What's changed is the tactics spammers use to circumvent the filters. This is an ongoing struggle: the spammers find new tricks and the filters find new ways to look for those tricks. The end result is a constantly shifting balance point. Users can modify their profile to filter more aggressively by lowering the score at which the system will quarantine or discard suspect mail, but in doing so increase the risk of dumping legit mail. Ultimately it all boils down to the score each message is assigned by the Sophos servers (a score of 0% to 100% that is included in the message header if it's 10% or more). The rules that assign this score are determined by Sophos and we can't modify them here.
However, we can directly contribute to the accuracy of those scores by submitting samples of spam to Sophos. Sophos has some pretty sophisticated, dynamic, extensive systems in place for gathering and identifying spam even as new techniques for sending it are developed. They have millions of users world-wide, and receive a heavy stream of spam samples at the address " is-spam@sophos.com" all day, every day. These samples are analyzed automatically and their spam signature databases are constantly modified. They publish new spam signature updates many times daily, and our systems are configured to load those updates hourly.
Your eyes might be glazing over by now. Here's the short version: Users can now submit samples of any spam that eludes the filters by forwarding them as an attachment to " spam@fhcrc.org." This address should be visible in the GAL by now (or will be shortly) and will automatically forward to the Sophos address. It's important that the message be forwarded as an attachment, otherwise the user is effectively submitting an email from their self as an example of spam.
Hope this helps. Let me know any questions or feedback.
